"Some of the most meaningful moments arrive when we least expect them. In Summer Evenings by Nathan Nicolau, life for Christina seems to be just passing by. She’s a recent high school graduate who isn’t looking forward to choosing or attending college. She’s on vacation with her parents, whom she assumes have expectations of her once their time at the beach is over. Memories of her grandmother’s encouragement linger in the back of her mind, adding to her confusion about the future she’s supposed to want. One day, she notices a man in orange under the pier and finds him somewhat intriguing. On another day, while trying to collect a shell that seems to be moving in the sand, that same man tells her of the clam inside it. He introduces himself as Captain. She isn’t sure what to make of him at first, but something about his calm presence draws her in. Their small conversations slowly start to shift the way she sees her summer, and even herself. Does meeting Captain finally give her life meaning? Or will this trip leave her just as unsure as before?
Summer Evenings by Nathan Nicolau is a quick yet very engaging read that I highly recommend. I found myself somewhat sad by how detached Christina was at the beginning of the story. I could relate to how she wasn’t sure what the future would hold for her. I also liked how her connection with Captain was central to her development. By the time I reached the end, I appreciated how their relationship evolves in a way that supports Christina’s journey rather than overshadowing it. Another thing I enjoyed was learning more about the coquinas Christina was trying to catch. I’ve often tried to find unique shells, too. This book packs a big life lesson in a small package."
